Complete Information About Types of Fish Feed

What Is Fish Feed?

Fish feeds are an integral part of commercial and personal aquaculture, which provides a balanced diet and nutrition for farmed fish. The aquaculture feed is mainly in pellets or granules, thus providing wholesome nutrition in a concentrated and stable form, allowing the fish to feed well and grow to maximum potential. The fish feeds’ critical components are fish oil and fish meal; it’s then combined with other vital ingredients like minerals, vitamins, cereal grains, and vegetable proteins, which in turn forms granules or pellets.

There are many types of fish feed available in the market today but there are different fish feeds for different species of fish. When you decide the feed for your fish, make sure that the fish get the right amount of nutrition from the feed. Different fish have different nutritional requirements and different fish require different types of fish feed. Fish feed contains essential nutrients, such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals. Fish feed can be defined as a mixture or compound of different ingredients. There are basically two types of fish feed in fish farming:

  • Dry fish feed
  • Non-dry fish feed

Dry Fish Feed

  • Dry fish feed is usually made of dry or a mixture of dry and moist ingredients.
  • Dry fish feed is not completely moisture free, the moisture content in it is usually around 7%-13% depending on the environment.
  • This fish feed is condensed into a certain size and is also commonly called pellet fish feed by mechanical means.
  • Depending on the formulation and compacting technique, it can be a floating fish feed or a sinking fish feed.
  • Dry fish feed is also called ‘mash fish feed’.
  • Dry Pellet Fish Feed comes in many shapes, depending on the processing technique, Pellet Fish Feed is made floating or sinking in water.
  • This type of small size fish feed can be given to small fish or shrimp. This is called crumbles.

Non-dry Fish Feed

  • This fish feed can be moist, extruded or non-extruded.
  • Extruded fish feed: It is made into a noodle-like product by being forced through narrow holes in special equipment.
  • Non-extruded fish feed: It is made from moist or non-extruded single ingredients or a mixture thereof, and is machined into a cake form.
  • The moist pellets in extruded fish feed are machined or sun-dried into sinking pellets.

Pellet Fish Feed

  • This fish feed is manufactured by expelling.
  • These fish feeds are usually compressed into a defined shape by a mechanical method.
  • Pellet fish feed can be defined as a solid substance with any given size and texture of small particles, through a mechanical process combining moisture, heat and pressure.
  • Pellet fish feed is a good and digestible fish feed for fish.
  • This fish feed in pellet form can reduce natural losses.

Sinking Fish Feed

  • It is also known as sinking pellet feed and hard pellet feed and is an economical fish feed.
  • Sinking fish feed remains stable in the water for about an hour and if it is not consumed by the fishes, it slowly sinks and settles on the bottom.
  • Sometimes sinking fish feed is used when the fish do not regularly come to the surface.
  • Sinking fish feed has high protein and fat content and can have good water absorption rate.
  • Sinking fish feed has the right amount of nutrients like vitamins, minerals and amino acids and is best suited for fishes like rohu, katla and mrigal.
  • Sinking fish feed sinks slowly in salt water.

Floating Fish Feed

  • Floating fish feed is more suitable for fish such as tilapia, catfish and eel.
  • Floating fish feed has moderate protein and fat content.
  • Floating fish feed is a bit more expensive than sinking fish feed.
  • Floating fish feed undergoes an expelling process during processing.
  • It helps to adjust the amount of fish feed per day and avoid pollution problems in the pond.
